Oil Change Precautions & Operating Steps
Important Precautions Before Changing the Oil
- Always shut down the compressor completely and allow it to cool to a safe handling temperature (below 40°C) before starting any maintenance.
- Relieve all system pressure fully before opening any oil circuit components. Never open fittings under pressure.
- Use only Atlas Copco genuine Roto Z Fluid. Mixing with other lubricant brands or types can compromise performance and void service agreements.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including oil-resistant gloves and safety glasses.
- Dispose of used oil in accordance with local environmental regulations. Do not pour used oil into drains or soil.
- Always refer to the specific service manual for your ZR/ZT compressor model before performing any maintenance.
Step-by-Step Oil Change Procedure
- Run the compressor for approximately 5–10 minutes to warm the oil slightly. Warm oil drains more completely than cold oil.
- Shut down the compressor and press the emergency stop. Disconnect power at the main isolator and lock out / tag out (LOTO) the machine.
- Wait for the compressor to fully depressurize and cool to a safe temperature.
- Place a suitable collection container beneath the oil drain port.
- Remove the drain plug slowly and allow the old oil to drain completely. Tilt the unit slightly if necessary to ensure full drainage.
- Replace the oil drain plug and tighten to the specified torque as indicated in the service manual.
- Locate the oil fill port and clean the area around it before opening.
- Pour the required quantity of fresh Atlas Copco Roto Z Fluid into the reservoir. Refer to your model’s service manual for the exact fill volume. Do not overfill.
- Replace and tighten the filler cap securely.
- Start the compressor and run it for 2–3 minutes. Check for any leaks around the drain plug and filler cap.
