Atlas Copco desiccant dryers offer the right air quality for your application with pressure dew points as low as -70°C/-100°F.

Why you need air dryer for quality air?

Compressed air contains oil, solid particles and water vapors. Together, they form an abrasive, often acidic, oily sludge. Without air treatment, this murky mix will enter your compressed air system, corroding pipe work, damaging pneumatic tools and potentially compromising final products.

Atlas Copco offers a comprehensive selection of compressed air dryers designed to meet the unique needs of various industries, ensuring clean, dry air that protects your equipment and enhances operational efficiency. Each type of air dryer is built to deliver optimal performance, energy savings, and reliability.

Reduce your energy costs

Large diameter vessels and optimally sized pipes and valves minimize pressure drops. Its efficient control system makes sure your adsorption dryer is properly used.

Easy installation

Delivered ready for use, designed to avoid hidden installation costs. All components including silencers, sensors and control units are mounted on a solid base frame with integrated forklift slots.

Reduce your production downtime

Extend your equipment’s life and increase your product quality by avoiding contamination. Our dryers’ low pressure dew point of -40°C/-40°F prevents water from entering your products or processes.

Set new quality standards

Tested according to ISO 7183:2007, Atlas Copco desiccant dryers meet and often exceed international standards for compressed air purity. Naturally, all our dryers provide full protection of electricalcomponents, controls and displays.

How does a desiccant air dryer work?

Twin tower desiccant air dryer working principle

Adsorption dryers are used when the compressed air application requires a pressure dew point below 0°. The regenerative desiccant dryers consist of two pressure vessels. Both vessels are filled with desiccant. One vessel is removing moisture from the compressed air.

Wet air passes directly through the desiccant bed which adsorbs the moisture. When this vessel is saturated with moisture the valves will switch and lead the air to the other standby vessel. During adsorption in the other vessel, the first vessel will be regenerated. It’s a cyclic process.

The desiccant medium has a finite capacity for adsorbing moisture before it must be dried out, or regenerated. To do this, the tower containing saturated desiccant medium is depressurized and the accumulated water is driven off.

How this happens depends on the type of dryer.

Atlas Copco SMD Membrane Air Dryers

Atlas Copco SMD membrane air dryers ensure the highest compressed air quality. Extend your equipment lifespan and increase efficiency with preventative air treatment.

Pressure Dew Point (PDP)

Pressure dew point (PDP) is used to define the water content in compressed air. Essentially, it is the temperature at which water vapor condenses into water at the current working pressure. Low PDP values indicate small amounts of moisture in the compressed air. To make that happen, you need the right dryer. And to choose the optimal technology for your application, you first have to know the dew point requirement of your application(s).

PDP suppression (PDPS)

Membrane dryers reduce the moisture content of compressed air without significantly changing its temperature. Instead of delivering a fixed outlet dew point, they provide dew point suppression (PDPS), which means they lower the dew point relative to the inlet air.

Membrane air dryer working principle

A membrane dryer consists of a cylinder that houses thousands of tiny hollow polymer fibers with an inner coating. These fibers remove water vapor through a process called “selective permeation.”

As wet compressed air enters the cylinder, the membrane coating allows water vapor to permeate through the membrane wall and collect between the fibers. In the meantime, the dry air continues through the fibers in the cylinder towards the outlet. A small amount of dry purge air carries the rejected water vapor and vents it through a purge outlet.

For example, if the inlet air is 35°C and 100% saturated, the inlet dew point is also 35°C. With a membrane dryer offering a -32°C PDPS, the outlet dew point would be approximately 3°C, while the air temperature remains around 35°C. This results in a much lower relative humidity at the outlet – in this case, about 12.6%.

Membrane Air Dryers Range

Atlas Copco SMD membrane air dryers with a pre-filter remove moisture, oil and particles from compressed air in the most demanding conditions.

SMD 3-32 up to SMD 35-32:
PDPS of 32˚C at reference conditions.

SMD 2-55 up to SMD 23-55:
PDPS of 55˚C at reference conditions.

What Problems Do Atlas Copco Air Dryers Help You Solve?

With Atlas Copco advanced air drying solutions, you can overcome these common problems, protect your equipment, and boost productivity while reducing costs.

Moisture Buildup and Corrosion

Excess moisture in compressed air systems can cause corrosion in pipes and damage to equipment, leading to costly repairs and reduced lifespan. Atlas Copco’s air dryers effectively remove moisture, ensuring your system stays protected and operates reliably.

Air Leaks and Pressure Drops

Air leaks and pressure drops are frequent issues that can increase energy consumption and reduce system efficiency. Atlas Copco’s air dryers help maintain consistent airflow and pressure, minimizing leaks and lowering energy costs.

High Energy Consumption

Inefficient air dryers can put additional strain on your system, leading to higher energy bills. Our air dryers are designed for energy efficiency, helping you reduce operational costs while maintaining peak performance.

Frequent Downtime and Maintenance

Poorly maintained air dryers can cause unplanned downtime, interrupting your operations and increasing maintenance costs. Atlas Copco’s air dryers are built for reliability and require minimal maintenance, ensuring maximum uptime and smooth operations.

Dew Point Non‑Compliance

Insufficient drying leads to an excessively high dew point, which allows moisture to reach downstream equipment and compromise process quality. Atlas Copco air dryers employ advanced control technology to deliver a consistently low and stable dew point for reliable performance.

Contamination and Quality Issues

Moisture, oil aerosols and particulates in compressed air can contaminate end products, posing serious risks in food, pharmaceutical and electronic applications. Atlas Copco air dryers, combined with efficient filtration, effectively remove these contaminants to safeguard product purity and safety.

Why choose Atlas Copco air dryers?

Moisture is an inevitable byproduct of the compression process. And it can have a harmful impact on your air system, your production equipment, and your end products.

Extend the Life of Your Compressed Air Systems

Our air dryers prevent moisture-related issues like corrosion and product contamination, ensuring long-term system reliability and minimizing equipment failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find clear answers to common questions about orders, shipping, returns, payments, and our services, helping you enjoy a smooth and confident shopping experience.

Moisture in compressed air causes corrosion, damages equipment, and contaminates end products. Drying prevents these issues and ensures reliable system operation.

Atlas Copco provides refrigerated dryers (for +3°C dew points), desiccant dryers (for -40°C to -70°C dew points), and membrane dryers (for compact, no‑power needs). Each type suits different applications and air quality requirements.

Select based on the required pressure dew point – refrigerated for general use, desiccant for ultra‑dry conditions, and membrane for special environments. Consult Atlas Copco’s experts for tailored recommendations.

They use variable‑speed drives, heat‑of‑compression regeneration, and low‑pressure‑drop designs to minimise power consumption. These features significantly reduce operating costs over the dryer’s lifetime.

Routine tasks include changing filters, checking refrigerant pressures, and replacing desiccant in adsorption models. Following the manual ensures optimal performance and longevity.

High dew point, excessive pressure drop, unusual noise, or blocked drains indicate potential problems. Prompt inspection and service prevent production disruptions.
